For five decades, women of African and Black heritage have played an extraordinary role in shaping the global landscape of entertainment, music, film, fashion, pageantry, poetry and cultural representation. Their voices have crossed borders, challenged conventions, created movements, inspired generations and transformed the way Black stories, identities and experiences are represented around the world.
Yet, much of this history remains scattered across individual biographies, newspaper archives, film records, music publications, interviews, cultural institutions and popular memory.
The Nelas Academy of Arts, Media and Television has undertaken this research and documentation project to help bring a significant part of that history together in one accessible visual archive.
THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color: 1975–2025 is an international retrospective documentation project celebrating outstanding Black and African women whose historical influence and work significantly influenced entertainment and the creative landscape during the period from 1975 to 2025.
The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color is a curated research and documentation selection, not a definitive ranking of all Black and African women who have contributed to global entertainment.
The project focuses specifically on five principal areas:
- Music
- Film & Television
- Entertainment
- Poetry
- Modelling
- Fashion
- Pageantry
- Cultural representation
Rather than presenting the project merely as a ranking, the Nelas Academy approaches it as a historical and cultural documentation exercise.
The objective is to identify, document and visually preserve the careers, achievements, influence and cultural significance of women whose creative contributions have helped shape African, Black and global popular culture.
WHY 1975–2025?
The fifty-year period covered by this project provides an important historical window through which the evolution of Black women in global entertainment can be observed.
From the emergence of influential recording artists and performers in the late twentieth century to the international expansion of African cinema, television, contemporary music, poetry, modelling and digital entertainment, the period witnessed remarkable changes in technology, audience culture, representation and global connectivity.
Across these decades, Black women moved from being represented primarily within national or regional entertainment markets to becoming increasingly influential participants in a truly global creative economy.
The Nelas Academy therefore considers 1975–2025 an important period for examining five decades of creative excellence, visibility, influence and cultural transformation.
A VISUAL RESEARCH DOCUMENT
The use of creative photography is central to the project because images are themselves historical documents. A photograph can preserve an era, a career, a performance, a cultural movement and a moment of public recognition in ways that written records alone cannot always achieve.
The posters therefore serve as visual entry points into a larger body of research.
Each featured personality represents a story of artistic achievement, cultural influence and historical significance.
Collectively, the images create a visual timeline of Black women’s contribution to entertainment and the creative industries across five decades.
FROM AFRICA TO THE WORLD
The project recognizes that the story of Black women in entertainment is not confined to one country or continent.
African women have contributed enormously to the development of global entertainment, while women of African descent across the Caribbean, Europe, North America and other parts of the world have equally contributed to the evolution of Black popular culture.
The Nelas Academy therefore approaches the subject from an international and diasporic perspective.
The project seeks to demonstrate the cultural connections between African creative traditions and the wider Black diaspora, while acknowledging the different industries, societies and historical circumstances in which these women built their careers.
RESEARCH, NOT SIMPLY RECOGNITION
The Nelas Academy recognizes an important distinction between an award and a research publication.
An award recognizes an individual.
A research publication documents a contribution for future reference.
This project seeks to do both at the level of cultural appreciation, but its primary objective is documentation and preservation.
The selection and presentation of personalities are therefore intended to encourage further research, discussion and appreciation of the achievements of Black women in entertainment.
The project should not be interpreted as suggesting that the women featured are the only great women of color in these fields.
Rather, they represent a carefully curated body of personalities whose careers and influence form part of the broader story of Black women in global entertainment between 1975 and 2025.
A CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURAL MEMORY
Every generation produces remarkable artists, performers, models, writers and cultural personalities.
However, without deliberate documentation, important parts of cultural history can gradually disappear.
The Nelas Academy believes that cultural memory must be actively preserved.
For this reason, the Academy’s research and publication initiatives seek to create accessible records that can be consulted by students, researchers, journalists, filmmakers, cultural historians, entertainment professionals and future generations.
The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color is therefore conceived not simply as an entertainment feature, but as part of a broader effort to contribute to the documentation of African and Black creative history.
THE ROLE OF THE NELAS ACADEMY
The project reflects the broader vision of The Nelas Academy of Arts, Media and Television as an emerging internationalinstitution operating at the intersection of arts, media, entertainment, research, cultural documentation and cultural diplomacy.
The Academy’s work extends beyond ceremonies and awards.
Through its publications, studies, film activities, cultural programmes, media projects and recognition platforms, the Nelas Academy seeks to create a growing body of knowledge and documentation around the people, institutions and creative movements that have contributed to African and global culture.
The Academy’s stated vision is to become one of the world’s leading institutions for promoting arts, media, television, film and cultural diplomacy. This research project represents one practical expression of that vision.
A RESOURCE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
The significance of this project extends beyond 2025.
The women documented here belong to different generations, countries, cultures and creative traditions. Their careers demonstrate different pathways to success and different forms of artistic influence.
For young women entering music, film, fashion, modelling, television, poetry and entertainment today, their stories provide examples of creativity, perseverance, leadership and cultural impact.
For researchers and historians, the project provides a visual starting point for further investigation.
For the entertainment industry, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of women whose work helped build the industries from which today’s generation benefits.
For Africa and the global Black diaspora, it represents an attempt to preserve part of a shared cultural heritage.
THE NELAS VISUAL ARCHIVE
The presentation of The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 forms part of the Academy’s growing digital documentation and publication platform.
The pictographic format makes the material accessible to a broad international audience while creating an opportunity for the project to evolve into a larger publication, exhibition, documentary, educational resource and archival collection.
The Nelas Academy intends for such projects to become part of a continuing culture of research, recognition and preservation.
EDITORIAL NOTE
The women featured represent different generations and creative disciplines. Their inclusion should therefore be understood within the Nelas Academy’s broader concept of historical influence between 1975 and 2025, not that every individual began her career in 1975.
The Nelas Academy recognizes that cultural influence often extends across generations. Some women became major forces during the period itself, while others established foundational artistic traditions whose influence continued to shape Black and African entertainment throughout the 1975–2025 period.
This distinction is particularly relevant to pioneering figures such as Aretha Franklin, whose foundational contribution to soul music predates 1975 but whose artistic influence remained deeply embedded in the subsequent generations of Black women performers. And people like Billie Holiday who died in 1959, and her influence does not literally fit within a 1975–2025 career-period definition.

The project seeks to preserve, interpret and present a representative body of extraordinary creative achievements and cultural influence for researchers, students, entertainment professionals, historians, journalists and future generations.
The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 is an international research and documentation project of the Nelas Academy which is an emerging international media, arts and cultural research institution created to celebrate and preserve the contributions of Black and African women to entertainment, music, film, Pageantry, poetry, modelling and cultural presentation.
