OUR STORY
The Nelas Academy of Arts, Media & Television is a Nigerian-founded creative and cultural institution with roots dating back to 2003, when its pioneering activities began at the Artists’ Village, National Theatre, Lagos.
Established at a time when Nigeria’s entertainment industry was undergoing a remarkable transformation, the initiative was conceived to recognise excellence, document emerging talents and personalities, promote professional standards, and contribute to the development and international visibility of Nigeria’s rapidly growing entertainment industry.
From its original focus on Nigerian entertainment and Nollywood, the institution has progressively evolved into a broader platform encompassing arts, media, film, television, publishing, cultural heritage, creative industries, humanitarian recognition, international cultural exchange and cultural diplomacy.
Today, The Nelas Academy continues to build upon that original vision while connecting African creative excellence with international cultural and creative communities.
2003 — THE BEGINNING
The history of The Nelas Academy begins in 2003 at the Artists’ Village, National Theatre, Lagos. The Nelas started receiving institutional and official recognitions from 2005.
The founding vision was to create a platform that would recognise and celebrate people contributing to the development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry while preserving a historical record of the personalities, professionals and creative practitioners shaping the emerging Nollywood era.
This period was significant in Nigeria’s cultural history.
Nollywood was rapidly developing into one of the world’s most prolific film industries, while Nigerian music, television, theatre, fashion and other creative sectors were gaining unprecedented visibility.
The Nelas initiative emerged within this environment with a mission to contribute to the professional recognition and documentation of the people driving this transformation.
The original initiative subsequently developed into what became known as The Nelas Academy Awards, historically associated with the Nollywood Excellence and Leadership Awards.
DOCUMENTING NIGERIA’S ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
One of the important early dimensions of the Nelas initiative was documentation.
Beyond recognising personalities, the organisation became involved in documenting individuals and institutions contributing to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
This included the development and publication of Who’s Who in Nigeria Entertainment, apioneering documentation project associated with the early development of the Nelas platform.
The publication sought to preserve information about important personalities within Nigeria’s entertainment landscape at a time when comprehensive digital records of the industry were still limited.
This documentation philosophy remains part of the Academy’s institutional DNA because creative achievements should not only be celebrated but also recorded, preserved and made accessible to future generations quoted “Frank Ikegwuonu founder and president of The Nelas”
2005–2007 — INSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION AND DOCUMENTATION
Between 2005 and 2007, the work associated with The Nelas initiative received correspondence, recognition and engagement from a number of Nigerian governmental, professional and cultural institutions.

THE NELAS ACADEMY AWARDS
The Nelas Academy Awards developed from the organisation’s original mission of celebrating excellence and leadership within Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Over the years, the awards expanded beyond conventional entertainment recognition to acknowledge achievements in areas including:

THE EVOLUTION OF THE INSTITUTION
The development of The Nelas Academy has taken place in several broad stages. PHASE I — ENTERTAINMENT RECOGNITION 2003 onwards: The original focus was the recognition and documentation of excellence within Nigeria’s entertainment industry and the emerging Nollywood movement.
PHASE II — DOCUMENTATION & PUBLICATION Mid-2000s onwards: The institution expanded its work into documentation and publishing, including Who’s Who in Nigeria Entertainment, Who’s Who in Nollywood, Top 100 Nollywood Celebrities, The Nollywood Encyclopedia and related historical records. The era also introduced cultural projects like “The Miss Nigeria Entertainment World” and the “Queen of Nollywood” Reality Tv Shows
PHASE III — LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE 2010s: The Academy’s recognition activities increasingly incorporated leadership, entrepreneurship, social impact and humanitarian service.
PHASE IV — INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION 2019 onwards: The Nelas Academy Awards developed an increasingly international character, with activities and recognitions extending beyond Nigeria, including international editions and participation in Germany, the United Kingdom and other international locations.

PHASE V — CULTURAL DIPLOMACY & CREATIVE INDUSTRIES 2025 onwards: The Academy began positioning its work more broadly around international cultural exchange, creative-industry development, cultural diplomacy, film, arts, media and humanitarian action.
PHASE VI — THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY ERA 2026: The Academy enters a new institutional chapter through its 20th-anniversary programme and the development of the Africa–Eurasia Cultural Exchange & Creative Industries Summit (AECCIS), alongside its awards, film festival and other cultural programmes like The 50 Most inspirational and Humanitarian People.
THE NELAS ACADEMY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOLLYWOOD
The Academy’s early history is closely connected with the development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry during the formative years of Nollywood.
The organisation’s activities sought to give greater visibility to actors, filmmakers, producers, directors, television professionals, musicians, media practitioners, entrepreneurs and other creative professionals by the introduction of the Who’s Who in Nollywood, and the Nollywood Encyclopedia see: Documenting the Rise of Nigeria’s Global Film Industry (Frank Ikegwuonu, the 1,200-Film Estimate, UNESCO, UNCTAD and the International Recognition of Nollywood)
The Nelas philosophy was based on the belief that the people building the entertainment industry deserved to be documented and recognised as part of Nigeria’s cultural history.
This historical connection remains one of the defining elements of the Academy
QUEEN OF NOLLYWOOD
Another important chapter in the institution’s history is the development of Queen of Nollywood(Reality shows, Awards, Pageant, Movie series)
The initiative emerged from the Academy’s wider interest in entertainment, talent development, women in the creative industries, fashion, culture and media.
Queen of Nollywood has subsequently developed into a platform connecting entertainment, cultural representation, women’s participation, fashion, tourism and international cultural exchange.
It forms part of the Academy’s broader creative-industry ecosystem.
INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION The Nelas Academy gradually developed an international dimension as its awards, recognitions, partnerships and creative activities expanded beyond Nigeria. The United Kingdom became an important location in the Academy’s international development, with The Nelas Academy Awards 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 editions and related activities taking place in London, UK. The organisation’s international engagement subsequently expanded into broader European and Eurasian cultural relationships.
THE NELAS ACADEMY AWARDS — INTERNATIONAL ERA The international development of the Nelas Academy Awards represents an important stage in the organisation’s evolution.
The awards have recognised individuals from different professional, cultural and geographic backgrounds for achievements in: creative excellence, leadership, humanitarian service, cultural contribution, entrepreneurship, international cooperation, social impact.
The international editions have helped transform the awards from a predominantly Nigerian entertainment recognition platform into an increasingly international recognition institution.
2019 — THE 14TH NELAS ACADEMY AWARDS The 14th Nelas Academy Awards took place in Abuja, Nigeria, marking another important chapter in the organization’s development because it hosted 12 international nominees who came to Abuja from United Kingdom and Germany. The edition demonstrated the Academy’s strong commitment to recognising excellence and leadership while expanding its institutional profile beyond the original entertainment-focused environment. The Abuja edition remains part of the Academy’s documented awards history.
LONDON AND THE INTERNATIONAL GENERATION The subsequent London editions represented a significant stage in the internationalization of The Nelas Academy Awards.
London provided an important platform for connecting Nigerian and African creative professionals with international personalities, mayors, entrepreneurs, cultural leaders and members of the wider African diaspora.
Independent Nigerian media coverage has also documented the Academy’s international awards activities and its origins dating back to 2003.
EURASIA AND A NEW CULTURAL DIRECTION The Academy’s activities in the Eurasian space represent another stage in its international development. By expanding its engagement beyond traditional African–Western cultural relationships, The Nelas Academy began exploring new opportunities for cooperation between Africa, Europe, Eurasia and the Balkans.
This development helped inspire the Academy’s broader cultural-diplomacy vision and eventually contributed to the creation of the Africa–Eurasia Cultural Exchange & Creative Industries Summit.
THE NELAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Film has remained central to the Academy’s history. The establishment and development of TheNelas International Film Festival expanded the Academy’s work from recognising filmmakers to providing a platform for films, filmmakers, directors, producers, actors and international audiences.
The festival reflects the Academy’s belief that cinema is one of the most powerful instruments for cultural understanding.
Through film, communities can tell their own stories, preserve cultural identity and create dialogue across borders.
The festival therefore forms an important part of the Academy’s transition from an awards organisation into a broader creative and cultural institution.
2025 — EURASIA AND THE NEXT CHAPTER The Academy’s 2025 activities marked an important stage in the development of its international cultural-exchange agenda.
The Nelas Academy Awards and related activities increasingly incorporated international personalities and humanitarian and cultural recognition.
The Eurasian dimension strengthened the Academy’s interest in building bridges between African and Eurasian creative communities. This period laid important groundwork for the Academy’s 2026 international programme.
2026 — THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY ERA In 2026, The Nelas Academy enters a major new chapter.
The year marks approximately two decades of the institution’s development from its origins at the Artists’ Village, National Theatre, Lagos, into an international creative and cultural platform.

THE FOUNDER The development of The Nelas Academy is closely associated with its Founder and President, Frank Ikegwuonu, whose professional work has included publishing, filmmaking, media entrepreneurship, cultural diplomacy and creative-industry development.
His early involvement in documenting Nigeria’s entertainment industry and establishing the Nelas initiative in 2003 laid the foundation for the institution’s subsequent development.
Over more than two decades, the Nelas vision has evolved from recognising Nollywood excellence into a wider philosophy of creative development, cultural exchange and international cooperation.
