Aṣa, born Bukola Elemide in Paris and raised in Lagos, is a Nigerian-French singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music combines soul, folk, pop, Yoruba musical traditions and elements of Afrobeat. Growing up in Lagos exposed her to a rich Nigerian musical environment, which later became an important foundation for her artistic identity. Her self-titled debut album, Aṣa, established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary African music, while songs such as “Jailer” and “Bibanke” helped introduce her music to audiences beyond Nigeria. Her subsequent albums have strengthened her reputation as an introspective songwriter with an international following. Aṣa represents an important generation of African artists who have demonstrated that Nigerian music can maintain strong cultural roots while communicating successfully with global audiences.

The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 is an international research and documentation project of the Nelas Academy which is an emerging international media, arts and cultural research institution created to celebrate and preserve the contributions of Black and African women in creative arts, entertainment, music, film, modelling, poetry, fashion, pageantry and cultural presentation.
