Agbani Darego is a Nigerian model and beauty queen whose international breakthrough created an important moment in African representation within global fashion and entertainment. Born in Lagos, she became Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria in 2001 and subsequently represented Nigeria at Miss World, where she was crowned Miss World 2001 in South Africa. The official Miss World archive records her historic victory at the November 16, 2001 competition in Sun City.

Darego’s achievement was particularly significant because she became the first Black African woman to win the Miss World title. Following her victory, she pursued an international modelling career and became associated with major fashion and beauty campaigns. Her success helped broaden international visibility for African models and demonstrated the growing presence of African women within global fashion and media. She later developed business and entrepreneurial interests, including the establishment of a fashion and lifestyle platform.

The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 is a research and documentation project of The Nelas Academy which is an emerging international media, arts and cultural research institution created to celebrate and preserve the contributions of Black and African women in creative arts, entertainment, music, film, modelling, poetry, fashion, pageantry and cultural presentation.
