Anita Baker is an American singer whose distinctive contralto voice and sophisticated approach to soul and R&B made her one of the defining artists of contemporary adult R&B. Emerging prominently during the 1980s, Baker became associated with a refined musical style combining soul, jazz and contemporary R&B.

Her breakthrough album Rapture established her as an international star and produced enduring songs including “Sweet Love,” “Caught Up in the Rapture” and “Giving You the Best That I Got.” Her work earned numerous Grammy Awards, with the Recording Academy listing eight Grammy wins from 18 nominations.

Baker’s importance extends beyond commercial success. Her controlled vocal technique, emotional interpretation and sophisticated musical arrangements influenced generations of R&B and soul singers. She remains one of the most respected voices associated with the genre’s evolution from the 1980s onward.

The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 is a research and documentation project of The Nelas Academy which is an emerging international media, arts and cultural research institution created to celebrate and preserve the contributions of Black and African women in creative arts, entertainment, music, film, modelling, poetry, fashion, pageantry and cultural presentation.
