Jennifer Hudson is an American singer, actress, producer and television personality whose career represents extraordinary achievement across multiple branches of entertainment. She first gained national attention as a finalist on American Idol before making her major film breakthrough as Effie White in Dreamgirls.

Her performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, alongside a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award. Her self-titled debut album subsequently won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

Hudson later achieved the rare EGOT distinction—winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. She also became a television host and producer. Her journey from a Chicago church singer to one of the most decorated women in American entertainment illustrates the possibilities of combining vocal talent, acting ability, perseverance and cross-industry creativity.

The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 is a research and documentation project of The Nelas Academy which is an emerging international media, arts and cultural research institution created to celebrate and preserve the contributions of Black and African women in creative arts, entertainment, music, film, modelling, poetry, fashion, pageantry and cultural presentation.
