Angela Bassett is one of the most acclaimed Black actresses in contemporary cinema. A graduate of Yale University and the Yale School of Drama, she established herself through powerful performances portraying both fictional characters and major historical figures.

Her breakthrough came with roles in Boyz n the Hood and Malcolm X, followed by her acclaimed portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Her filmography subsequently included Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Bassett has also enjoyed a major television career, including American Horror Story and 9-1-1, where she served as star and executive producer. In 2024 she received an Academy Honorary Award, recognizing her extraordinary contribution to motion pictures.

The Nelas 100 Great Women of Color 1975–2025 is a research and documentation project of The Nelas Academy which is an emerging international media, arts and cultural research institution created to celebrate and preserve the contributions of Black and African women in creative arts, entertainment, music, film, modelling, poetry, fashion, pageantry and cultural presentation.
